Over the last 7 years ACTION has been committed to helping teens and young adults, many with disabilities, do work they love and make a difference they’re passionate about.
Our approach is to love students for who they are, to help them develop a mission and vision for their lives, and to help them take ACTION from where they are through fun, hands-on experiences.
We’re excited to help Cuyahoga County students with disabilities transition into thriving work and independent lifestyles through Pre-Employment Transition Services.
Students will identify their personal motivations for working and complete interest inventories to discover what type of work fits their interests, strengths, and goals. They will research their top 3 career options and what it takes to pursue each of them from where they are in the process.
Students increased their understanding of their rights and responsibilities. Students will study and practice leadership skills to support success in the workplace and in relationships. They will also expand their awareness of local communities and resources that align with their career goals.
Students will practice appropriate work behaviors and communication via activities like mock interviews, role playing workplace situations, attending job fairs, and mock job interviews. They will also complete (mock) job applications and resumes so they are prepared to secure employment when they are ready.
Students may participate in work-site tours and job shadowing experiences at community businesses, obtaining first-hand knowledge of work settings and the opportunities available to them. Students will learn appropriate worksite behaviors and begin applying the knowledge and tools they learned.
Students will navigate postsecondary opportunities, including trade school, jobs, 2-year college, 4-year universities and other opportunities. Students will also learn about financial literacy, including budgeting, work incentives, and information about student aid options like the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and scholarships. Students will also articulate differences between secondary and postsecondary support improving understanding of how accommodations work on campus (e.g., interpreting services, service animals, etc.). By the end of this subcategory students should identify the postsecondary option that best fits our students’ vision, career interests, and skills.
